Squanto: A Warrior’s Tale (1994)

Concept featured in clip: The Nature of Science
Location of clip: (DVD)

Summary of clip: Squanto is living with an order of brothers in England after he was taken from The New World. Brother Daniel has formed a close bond to Squanto and does not want him to leave, while Brother Paul says Squanto is healed and should leave. Brother Paul then explains why and talks about the world as they know it.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: Brother Paul tells Brother Daniel that they had received a flower from their brothers in Spain but it wasn’t thriving because the climate in England was wring for it to bloom, much like Squanto being in England instead of his own home. Brother Paul goes onto talk about the Earth as people of the time believed it to be, flat.
Suggestions to teachers:

i. Suggested questions for students to when viewing the clip:
1. Why did Brother Paul think they were forgetting their purpose in being Brothers?
2. What plant did Brother Paul show Brother Daniel and why did Brother Paul compare it to Squanto?
3. What are Brother Paul’s thoughts about the world they live in? Is he old fashioned or progressive? What about Brother Daniel?

ii. Suggested activity for students:
1. This is a good video to show if you are beginning a unit of the history of science since it was believed that there was only one world (Earth) and that it was flat, and not round.
