Summary of clip: This is the traditional story of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, who is different than most because his nose is red and can glow instead of being a normal nose. His parents try to cover his nose because they are embarrassed for him.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: Genetic mutations can come in many forms. In the case of Rudolph, his genetic mutation hasn’t been seen before and it causes his nose to be red and glow.

i. Suggested questions for students to when viewing the clip:
1. What animals are being showcased in the clip?
2. What makes Rudolph different than his parents?
3. How do his parents and Santa react to his nose?
4. What other mutations to the reindeer have in general from more “traditional” reindeer?

ii. Suggested activity for students:
1. Have the play a genetic chance game. Students have to flip a coin or roll a die and they create a creature or human based on what they role. This gives students an opportunity to understand the randomness of genetics.
