Summary of clip: Ben Randall is trying to teach the Coast Guard Rescue recruits the effects of hypothermia through real life example - putting them in freezing cold water! He explains the stages of hypothermia as they happen to the recruits.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: This clip discusses the stages of hypothermia. The body is constantly monitoring and adjusting its processes to maintain homeostasis. This is a great intro to hypothermia since it shows it in action! Then lead a discussion on homeostasis and what happens if the body is unable to regulate its temperature effectively suffering from hypothermia or hypothermia.

Suggestions to teachers:

1. As students watch movie have them take notes on the stages of hypothermia.

2. Compile their list and then research more to cover all the effects of hypothermia on the body.

3. Discuss if anyone has ever jumped in a cold pool or body of water and what they felt.

4. Have students browse through the University of Alberta's"Blood Flow and Thermoregulation" interactive project.

5. Have students attempt to keep a person alive in the interactive "Body Control Center"

6. Discuss the effects of hypothermia and hyperthermia on the body to make a concept map of similarities and differences.
