Concept featured in film: Stability of Equilibrium

Location of clip:

Play Flickclip Here

Summary of clip: The scene opens at the football game. You see Moxon (James Vanderbeek) leading his team down the field with a couple of long passes. Then, the next play, he runs the ball and jumps in the air just as he gets hit from two sides, by two opposing players. He spins in the air, but his momentum is great enough to carry him over the end zone line for a touchdown.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: This is a good clip to introduce the concept of stability equilibrium.

Suggestions to Teachers:

1. Suggested questions for students when viewing the clip:

2. Students may perform various exercises (lifting a chair, standing on one leg) to test their center of gravity.

a. How does center of gravity differ between the sexes?

3. Two linebackers execute a hi-lo tackle on a ball carrier. Explain in terms of torque and force how the ball carrier's motion will be affected.

a. Where is the best location on the body to tackle a ball carrier?

4. Have students come up with other everyday examples of angular momentum being conserved.
