Summary of clip: Benny comes to Scotty’s house on the 4th of July to let him know they are playing a night game. The lights from the fireworks provide enough light for the boys to play at night and feel like they are playing under the lights like the major leaguers. They all stop playing the game to enjoy the fireworks.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: The different colors of the fireworks are the result of different chemical compounds giving off different light wavelengths when burned. The level of energy released from each type of atom corresponds to a particular wavelength of light.
Suggestions to teachers:

1. Suggested questions for students:

What colors do you see in the fireworks?

How do different explosions from the fireworks make different colors?

2. Watch the following NOVA video: http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/phy03_vid_fireworkcol/

3. Provide a demonstration heating different compounds moistened with ethanol and have students make predictions and observations to describe the color of the flame. (NaCl, KNO3)
