Summary of clip: Dre has entered a Kung Fu tournament after several months of training with Mr. Han. He is hoping to prove himself to the bullies from his school. He wins a series of matches using his focus skills to put all his energy into each punch and kick and advances to the semifinals.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: Pressure is force divided by area. Kung Fu uses the principle that a hit is more intense if all the energy is put into a small area. When a Kung Fu fighter breaks a board it is with the total body energy in the side of the hand rather a large area like the palm of the hand.
Suggestions to teachers:

1. Suggested questions for students:

Why does Dre hold his hands the way he does during the match?

Do you think his hits would be as intense if he hit with an open hand?

Can you think of anything else that Kung Fu fighters do with the sides of their hands?

2. Have students explore the force of an object on a large surface area compared to a small surface. Use a blown up balloon on one nail vs a piece of wood with 50 nails spaced evenly apart.
