Summary of clip: In this clip, Manny, Sid, and Diego are attempting to find the human baby's family. On the way, they accidentally find an ice cavern that is full of frozen animals.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: During the ice age, most of the animals of the time period did not survive the migration of the ice sheets and in many occasions, evidence of their existence was frozen in time, allowing for study of the evolution of the prehistoric animals.

Suggestions to teachers:

1. Suggested questions for students when viewing the clip:

a. Why are these animals stuck in the ice cavern? What occurred to allow for this to happen?

b. How can these speciments be used to study evolution?

c. Are the animals that have been preserved in the ice still in existence? Are there species that are similar to it now?

2. This clip can begin a discussion on glacial periods and the effects of the glaciers on the environment. The students can do research on the development of Hueston Woods State Park in Oxford, OH or Glacier National Park, MT.

3. This clip can be used to start a discussion of the theories on global warming and melting of the polar ice caps. Students can discuss what effects the melting ice sheets will have on the overall environment. Students can discuss what is causing global warming and what can be/ is being done to slow these effects.

4. Follow the lesson plan from Science Netlinks for The Rise and Fall of Mammoths:(http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/
lessons.cfm?BenchmarkID=5&DocID=287)
where students will use the internet to research the evolution and extinction of Mammoths.
