Summary of clip: The scene opens with Dennis Quaid using his ham (amateur) radio back in 1969. He is talking with a man that is actually his own son John in the future, 1999. They are discussing using the ham radio to contact locations as far away as China. John's father is talking about activities that are happening in his present time (1969), but John finds it strange that this person would be referring to past events as though they were happening in the present.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: This is a good clip to introduce the concept the propagation of radio waves.

Suggestions to teachers:

1. Suggested questions for students when viewing the clip:

Teachers can start by asking students basic questions about electromagnetic waves:

a. What types of waves are radio waves? What are some properties of these waves?

b. What frequency range are radio waves?

c. Differentiate between AM and FM (i.e., what does AM/FM stand for).

d. What are some properties/characteristics of antennas?

e. What do radio antennas"catch"

f. How are straight radio waves transferred around a curved earth?

g. How do solar disturbances affect radio wave propagation?

h. Students can also explore the ionosphere.
