Summary of clip: The Fantastic 4 are fighting Doctor Victor von Doom in this scene. Doctor Doom has turned into an organic metal capable of absorbing and manipulating electrical energy. Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben must use their powers against him. Reed stretches like rubber around Dr. Doom to contain him. Ben uses his super strength to pull Reed off at just the right time and let Johnny produce a fire at supernova temperatures around Dr. Doom as Sue contains them in a force field. Once Johnny is finished heating up Dr. Doom, Ben pops open a fire hydrant and Reed douses Dr. Doom in cold water, giving him a lesson in “CHM 101: What happens when you rapidly cool hot metal”

Connection of flickclip to the concept: This futuristic clip covers the basics of what happens when you rapidly cool hot metal turning Dr. Doom into a solid piece of metal unable to move!

Suggestions to teachers:

After students watch the clip:

1. Discuss what they saw and how it represents a property of metal. Discuss what well known elements are metallic or non-metallic in nature.

2. Have them work through this interactive web site, made by NOVA, that describes the crystalline structure of metal when the substance is bent, cooled, heated, or changed by external forces;

3. Create a concept map of the properties of metals they know.

4. Havestudent's research metal properties to add to the map.

5. Discuss these properties and introduce any others you want them to know.

6. Group these properties and show how they are used in the periodic table for elements.
