Summary of clip: This clip begins with the town meeting at the high school where citizens are expressing their concerns about evacuating the town and ends with Dr. Dalton and Rachel arriving at Rachel's house.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: This flickclip is a very visual way to introduce students to earthquakes and the Mercalli Scale of Intensity. The students can witness the effects the earthquakes have on the environment and relate it to a value on the Mercalli Scale.
Suggestions to teachers:
1. Suggested questions for students when viewing the clip:

a. People first notice the quakes with the movement of the glasses of water on the table. What value on the Mercalli Scale do you think this is? What about pictures falling off walls, the fall of the church tower, etc.?

b. When buildings begin to collapse, notice that only brick buildings are falling. What are the differences between brick and wooden buildings and why do earthquakes make one fall more easily than the other?

c. People begin panicking and rush chaotically out of the gymnasium. Was this the right thing to do? What should you do when you experience an earthquake? Why is remaining calm important?

d. What is the difference between intensity and magnitude?

2. You can show this clip and have the students do research about earthquake destruction. The collapse of the highways and overpasses is strikingly similar to the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco.

3. You can use this clip to introduce students to your city's emergency evacuation procedures and what students should do in the event of an earthquake.
