Summary of clip: The group is trying to cross the Brooklyn Bridge to get away from Manhattan and escape the wrath of the unknown monster. Everyone else in New York is doing the same thing, so the bridge has bottlenecked and there are people on every square inch. Suddenly a giant, tentacle-like appendage smashes the bridge. No one gets a good look at whatever it was. After the monster thwarted their escape, the group finds themselves in an electronics store where other fugitives are watching news stories about the monster terrorizing the city. The news story shows brief clips of the unknown creature moving about the city. ** Note to teachers: some profanity in clip.
Connection of flickclip to the concept: A taxonomist's job is to classify and name species by observing their structure, origin, and behavior. Sometimes this deals with live, easily accessible animals, other times, it deals with species that have been extinct for over millions of years and live on only through fossil record. In this scene, they discover an enormous, previously unidentified organism that no one knows anything about.
Suggestions to teachers:
1. Suggested questions for students after viewing the clip:

a. After watching the clip, what observations might help you classify this creature?

b. What organism do you think is most closely related to the monster? Why?

c. How would you classify this organism and why?

2. Have students break into small groups to create an organism that lives in a particular environment. When the groups are finished, have them swap organisms. The groups should make ovservations of their neighbor's creation noting morphology, size, etc. and classify the organism into a group that you feel best fits its features.
