Summary of clip: Mater is the town tow truck in Radiator Springs. He is on another call to pick up Otis, a lemon who consistently has car troubles. He tries to make Otis feel better by telling him he is also not perfect. He secretly tells Otis that his rust is starting to show.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: Mater is almost completely covered in rust. Rust is a chemical process and is a result of a reaction between iron and oxygen in the presence of water. This is often referred to as corrosion.
Suggestions to teachers:

1. Suggested questions for students:

Why does Mater look that color?

What is required for Mater to rust?

What can be done to prevent your car from rusting?

2. Explore rusting with steel wool that has been commercially treated with oil. Have students make observations of steel wool before and after washing with a detergent to remove the oil. What does the oil do in terms of the oxidation reaction of rust formation?

3. Explore thermochemistry and observe the heat created by energy transfer in chemical reactions like rusting.
