Summary of clip: Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are chipmunks staying in Dave’s home. While he sleeps at night the chipmunks make a mess of his apartment. Dave discovers waffles and syrup under the carpet and they inform him they are saving it for winter. He explains that food will be available throughout the winter and there is no need to store food.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: Some animals hoard food to hide it from competitors or to store it for times of less availability. Alvin and his brothers are used to living in the wild. They are unfamiliar with the idea of unlimited availability of food.
Suggestions to teachers:

1. Suggested questions for students:

Why are the chipmunks hiding waffles under the rug?

What are some reasons animals might store food?

What other animals can you think of that store food for the winter?

2. Watch the following you tube video of a chipmunk storing nuts in his cheeks:

3. Research where hoarding animals store their food and if they are able to remember where they store it.
