Summary of clip: Alvin and his brothers, Theodore and Simon, are talking chipmunks that have snuck into Dave’s house to find food. Dave finds them and realizes they can talk. Dave is freaked out by his discovery and throws them out in the rain. He hears that they can also sing. Being a songwriter, he is amazed and lets them back in.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: Chipmunk's signature songs are an example of speeding up sound waves to create high- pitched voices. The differences in sound wave properties (frequency, wavelength, amplitude) create the different sounds we hear.
Suggestions to teachers:

1. Allow students to download music to the site Audacity and edit the music in different ways. Increasing the pitch will create the "chipmunk effect."

2. Have students explore sound waves with different stations revealing the different mediums through which sound waves travel (liquids, solids, gases).

-a tuning fork tapped and placed in water

-a coffee can drum made by covering with plastic wrap and topped with paper clips

-plucking a rubber band between two pegs

3. Have students complete observation sheets for each station including what they see and hear. Together as a class discuss observations and determine the medium required to carry the sound waves.
